Typically, the person in question has either been an important part of a major event or made a unique declaration or suggestion which was documented. Barbara Heck left neither letters or statements. Actually, the only evidence we have for issues like the date of Barbara Heck's marriage stems from second-hand sources. It's difficult to discern the motives of Barbara Hell and her behaviour throughout her entire life from the primary sources. Yet, she's remained an iconic figure in the early years of North American Methodism time. In this case, the biographer's task is to define and explain the legend and if possible to describe the actual person depicted in it.

It was the Methodist historian Abel Stevens wrote in 1866. Barbara Heck's humble title is considered to be the most important in the ecclesiastical histories of New World because of the growing popularity of Methodism. Her record should be mostly attributed to the setting of her precious name based on the story of the cause which her memory is forever associated more so than from the history of her own lives. Barbara Heck's role in the founding of Methodism was a fortunate coincidence. Her popularity is due her involvement in the beginning of Methodism because it's come to be a standard practice of extremely powerful movements or institutions to exalt their origins, in order to preserve ties with the past.
